CFCC pays tribute to those lost in terrorist attacks
CASTLE HAYNE, NC (WWAY) — As Americans across the United States honor the lives lost during the 2001 terrorist attacks, many from our area gathered to pay their respects at Cape Fear Community College.
The Remembrance Ceremony began with a silent procession of students in the First Responders Academy who laid helmets around the student made 9/11 Memorial at CFCC’s Safety Training Center.
In 2011 students from several different programs worked together to construct the monument that served as Friday morning’s backdrop. There are nearly 3,000 holes in the memorial’s towers, each representing a life lost on September 11, 2001.
“Appreciate life. Appreciate every day we do have, and be thankful for those first responders that are there to answer those calls,” said Battalion Chief Tom Robinson with the Wilmington Fire Department.
During the ceremony President Dr. Amanda Lee unveiled the memorial’s plaque. She said the memorial is a place where anyone can visit anytime to reflect.
