Parking spots go green in Downtown Wilmington

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Several parking spots in Downtown Wilmington went green Friday for International PARKing Day.

Twenty-seven interactive parks took over metered parking spots to promote green and pedestrian-friendly urban spaces.

Cape Fear Museum was one of the organizations participating, and its goal was to promote its new nature park, which will open next week.

“This was a great avenue for the museum to work,” Cape Fear Museum Public Relation Specialist Amy Mangus said. “PARKing day is all about creating green space within the city, and that’s exactly what we have done with the Cape Fear Museum park. We have created a park within the city limits in an urban area.”

PARKing Day was founded in 2005 in San Francisco to raise awareness of the need for more open space in urban settings.

This is the fifth year Wilmington has been a part of this international event.
