Camp Lejeune Marine named US Marines Male Athlete of Year

ELKO, Nev. (AP) — A 27-year-old northeast Nevada native has been named the US Marine Corps Male Athlete of the Year.

Capt. Bryce Saddoris grew up in Spring Creek near Elko. He finished sixth in the NCAA championships when he wrestled for the Naval Academy, and is now a commissioned supply officer at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina.

Saddoris told the Elko Daily Free Press the award caught him by surprise. He says he’s looking forward to taking a couple of family members with him to the formal ceremony in Washington DC this spring.

Meanwhile, Saddoris has his sights set on the US Olympic Wrestling Trials in Iowa City, Iowa in early April. He plans to train with world champion Frank Staebler of Germany. Staebler defeated Saddoris in the quarterfinals of the 2015 World Championships.
