Wilmington Mayor Bill Saffo shares with students the importance of elections

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Municipal elections are Tuesday and voters will have their say in a number of races across the Cape Fear.

In Wilmington, Mayor Bill Saffo visited some of the youngest soon-to-be voters discussing the importance of voting.

He also helped those third-grade students at Wilmington School of the Arts learn about the role of city government and elections.

Students were eager to learn more, after participating in a class election of their own.

The Mayor said it’s good when children take interest in elections even before they can vote, as it educates them to be responsible voters in the future.

“We’re the government that’s closest to the people. We’re the government that picks up the trash — your policemen, your firemen, your parks and recreation,” Saffo said. “All the things that you do on a day in day out basis, your city or county governments are participants in that.”

Mayor Saffo has served eight terms, and he is the longest-serving mayor in the City of Wilmington’s history.
