Hundreds attend memorial service in NC for exonerated man

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) – A longtime friend of Darryl Hunt says he found a note from the exonerated man that made it clear that he was frustrated and “was just going to check out.”

The Winston-Salem Journal reported (http://bit.ly/1MvLaqX ) that Hunt friend and supporter Larry Little was among those who spoke Saturday at a service for Hunt, who served 19 years in prison for a murder he didn’t commit. Hundreds of people attended the service at Emmanuel Baptist Church in Winston-Salem.

Little says Hunt was suffering from stomach and prostate cancer and that he blamed himself for the breakup of his marriage.

Police found Hunt’s body March 13 in a vehicle in a parking lot. They later said Hunt died from self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Hunt had filmed a video farewell that was played at his memorial service.
