Southport mayor Joe Pat Hatem loses to Rich Alt by 1 vote in canvass
SOUTHPORT, NC (WWAY) — After Friday’s canvass of election results in Brunswick County, it appears Southport Mayor Joe Pat Hatem lost in the race by one vote.
The unofficial election results initially showed Hatem winning the race by three votes.
According to results from the Brunswick County Board of Elections canvassing the votes on Friday, Rich Alt has 840 votes and Joe Pat Hatem has 839.
Alt is currently on the Southport Board of Aldermen.
Either candidate can now request a recount of the votes. Any candidates who want to request a recount in a race where the difference in votes is one percent or less have until Monday at 5PM to request a recount.
The recount will be done on November 28.
