Computer camp uses Squeak

Last week, we told you about a computer camp at UNCW teaching middle and high schoolers how to do computer-animated story telling.

This week, a similar camp on campus is using the same program.

Fifty students from local counties, many of whom don’t have regular access to computers, are using technology to learn about mathematics, science, and engineering.

The students are creating virtual models with a program called ‘Squeak’ that simulate science and math experiments.

“I learned that keeping a business together is really tough, and when I want a business in the future I need to handle my money very well, and some people today need to notice that in the economy,” said Myrtle Grove Middle School student Skyler Julian.

The program is free to students. It’s funded by a million dollar grant from the National Science Foundation.
