Hurricane season outlook anticipates more storms than 2015

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Forecasters said this year’s hurricane season could be more lively than last year.

According to the Tropical Meteorology Project at Colorado State University, forecasters said we could have 13 named storms this year, with six becoming hurricanes. Those numbers include Hurricane Alex, which formed in January.

Forecasters said the season would be considered average, due to the weakening El Niño that they said will transition to either neutral or La Niña conditions by the peak of the season. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30.

Forecasters urge folks in coastal regions to remember that it only takes one storm to cause devastating damage, and folks need to have items in their homes now to prepare for the season. Items include First Aid kits, extra batteries and other items necessary in case of a power outage.
