Disabled Sportsman Tournament brings hundreds to Kure Beach

KURE BEACH, NC (WWAY) — Hundreds took to the pier in Kure Beach for the annual Disabled Sportsman Tournament. For almost 30 years disabled folks from every age group and from all over the state gather to fish from the pier and have a great time.

Volunteers help with everything from baiting the lines to weighing the fish and they say that have just as much fun as the participants.

“I have a sign at home that says ‘Fishing is not a sport, it’s a way of life,’ and it is. It’s just something that’s fun to do. Everybody can do it no matter what physical condition or mental condition you’re in, anybody can do it and it’s so much fun!” said Butch Martin the president of the Got ‘Em On Live Bait Fishing Club out of Carolina Beach.

Martin said the whole community comes together every year to make the tournament possible and it continues to grow and bring in more fisherman each year.
