Police: How to celebrate New Year’s Eve night safely
CAPE FEAR REGION (WWAY) — WWAY spoke with both the Wilmington and Leland Police Departments about how to transition into 2024 with ease.
Master Officer Justin Holland with Leland P.D. said to enjoy your night but keep your life and the lives of others in mind.
He said there will be increased patrol officers keeping an eye out for those drinking and driving.
Holland encouraged everyone to designate a driver before the night begins.
“If you see us out and about, we are out there strictly for safety. We want to make sure you get to and from in a safe manner because there are families on the road,” Holland.
Meanwhile in Wilmington, Police said there will be no shortage of officers out to keep you safe.
The department has enlisted extra help from overtime officers to patrol the downtown area. But Traffic Unit Officer Biss Kistler said to be sure to remain aware of your surroundings.
“So just keep yourself safe. If you are at a bar, try to keep an eye on your surroundings,” Kistler said. “Be cognizant of the people around you, what you’re drinking. If something happens in a bar, there’s security personnel, there’s bouncers present. If there’s a problem, let someone know. If it comes to it, you can always leave, go to a different place.”
She reminded everyone who is celebrating to make arrangements for a ride home if you are drinking.
While an Uber peak fee can reach $70, she said it is a lot less than the average D.W.I. or funeral cost which both start around $10,000.
