New track helps kids get exercise and stay safe

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Mary C. Williams Elementary officially opened their new track this morning.

“We can just walk the track and talk and having [sic] fun,” said fourth grader Anthony Graham.

Students and staff said the facility is for more than just fun.

“Childhood obesity, I mean we’re fighting it. And so we really want to instill the love of physical education in our students,” said principal Amy Oots. She adds this is a major improvement. “We had a little gravel path and the kids would stumble and fall on it. They would bring it in, ruin the wax on the floors of the school.”

Kids said the new paved track is not only a better place to walk and run, it’s much safer too.

“When we didn’t have this track, when we ran some of the kids sometimes fell when it rained. The sand was very slippery,” said fourth grader Jazmin Delvallmarino.

Now kids and grown-ups can safety enjoy their exercise and get in all those steps everyday because the folks at Mary C. Williams are planning some fitness challenges for the upcoming school year.
