Thousands mistakenly lose drivers’ licenses in NC

WINSTON-SALEM, NC (AP) – Thousands of drivers across North Carolina have mistakenly lost their drivers’ licenses because the state Department of Motor Vehicles isn’t properly handling paperwork.

Forsyth County Clerk of Court Susan Frye told the Winston-Salem Journal that the DMV is failing to properly update when drivers deal with a missed court date or unpaid fine for a ticket before their licenses are supposed to be suspended.

DMV Commissioner Kelly Thomas says the agency was dealing with a backlog of court records and should have the problems fixed.

It wasn’t clear exactly how many people are affected in North Carolina, but Frye says her office was getting dozens of calls a day.

Frye says she even heard from people who lost jobs after losing their licenses.
