“Connect a Million Minds” initiative looks to help students with science, technology and math

Groups of middle school students got a dose of science up close Thursday afternoon in Wilmington. It was part of Time Warner Cable’s “Connect a Million Minds” initiative, an effort to connect students with learning opportunities in science, technology, engineering and math.

Thursday on the riverfront, students learned about gyroscopes; devices used in lots of machinery.

“They’ll also be riding Segways, learning about the science behind them. And then they’ll also be using remotely operated vehicles with MarineQuest from UNCW and learning about the gyroscopes and how that works. And then they’ll finish over at the battleship talking about gyroscopes over on the battleship and how they use gyroscopes there,” said Andi Curtis from Time Warner Cable.

A recent North Carolina study found only one in three students met standards in math, with only one in five meeting standards in science.
