What’s next for Leland after striking out on baseball stadium proposal?

LELAND, NC (WWAY) — On Thursday, the town of Leland announced it would no proceed with building a proposed baseball stadium.

And lots of people have mixed feelings about the decision.

The town spent the past 18 months looking into the feasibility of building the stadium along Highway 17. A feasibility study cost the town $30,000.

While many residents voiced their opposition to the idea of the idea during a town hall meeting Thursday night, others were hoping the town wouldn’t strike out.

Leland resident Doug Chamberlain said while he’s a bit disappointed baseball isn’t coming to Leland, the town still needs to work on bringing more business to the area.

“As far as bringing other businesses or other peripheral businesses like restaurants, I didn’t know what would be brought to the area,” Chamberlain said. “I think one thing that Leland needs is nice restaurants. We have fast food restaurants and thats okay but it would be nice to have more sit-down restaurants in Leland.”

The town of Leland said the idea of building a stadium is paused at the moment but could come up again in the future.
