CSX lands site for cargo terminal after 1st pick blocked

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) – CSX Corp. will build a cargo terminal in eastern North Carolina at a second-choice site after opposition by landowners blocked the railroad company’s first option.

Officials said Tuesday that CSX will build its intermodal cargo hub in Edgecombe County, near the Virginia border. The terminal would transfer cargo stored in containers between CSX railroad cars and ships leaving North Carolina ports.

North Carolina will spend about $100 million for track improvements and other transportation infrastructure, plus tax breaks worth up to $4 million. About 150 new jobs are expected.

CSX in January announced it planned to build the cargo hub south of Raleigh in Johnston County. That plan was scratched after landowners opposed the prospect of being forced to sell their property.
