Deputies investigating after owner finds dog beaten nearly to death
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office is investigating after a man found his dog beaten nearly to death earlier this month.
Brian Dressler said it happened on July 14.
“Pets are like family to us and she’s like my child, and I don’t know how I would live without her,” Dressler said.
When Dressler got home from work that day, he faced that terrifying possibility.
“Found Banks laying on the floor,” Dressler said. “She basically looked unconscious foaming at the mouth with cuts.”
He immediately rushed her to the hospital.
“What they were telling me was blunt force trauma or she was hit by a car,” Dressler said.
As animal control started investigating, Dressler said banks began a long list of operations.
“They immediately did a transfusion,” Dressler said. “They said there was a 50/50 chance at that point.”
After multiple transfusions, blood clotting, liver complications, antibiotics, and 12 days at the vet, Banks came home.
“We have a long ways to go, but at least we got her back home,” Dressler said.
Dressler said each day they get a little closer to normal.
“Banks is, she’s got more energy than any dog I know,” Dressler said.
Meanwhile, the vet bills are piling up. Dressler said they are facing at least $10,000, but he said the support is also pouring in fast.
“Everyone has just been absolutely amazing,” Dressler said. “A coworker of mine, Allie Johnson, started a GoFundMe and I didn’t know too much about it.”
Within ten days, it reached more than $6,000.
“Immediately, it was like wildfire,” Dressler said. “It took off and it was incredible.”
While Dressler is beyond thankful, he was planning on doing anything he had to, because Banks is family.
“You know, even before the GoFundMe and stuff you know I had in my head, and I told my parents I’m going to do anything I possibly can to get her back,” Dressler said. “It doesn’t matter the cost. I’m going to make it happen. I’m going to get her back home.”
The sheriff’s office is still investigating at this time. no charges have been filed yet.
