WTXY 103.9 cleans up after weekend fire in Whiteville

WHITEVILLE, NC (WWAY) — A Columbus County broadcasting business is cleaning up and assessing the damage this evening following a weekend fire.

WTXY 103.9 on Virgil St. in Whiteville caught fire Saturday night. A pastor in the area noticed smoke in the air and reported it.

Whiteville, Brunswick, and Chadbourn Fire all responded to the scene. So did Whiteville Rescue. Crews quickly got the blaze under control, and no one was hurt.

The exact cause has not been determined but it appears it may have started in an electrical panel in the building.

Glasgow Hicks is the Co-owner of WTXY. He said he is thankful that no one was in the building or hurt during the fire. But he said this is of course a setback.

“Our FM transmitter is toast. I think our AM transmitter is ok. As far as equipment and everything, it’s close to a total loss,” Hicks said.

He said the next step is cleaning up and deciding if the building is a total loss as well.
