Humpday Health: Know your numbers to better reach your goals


WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) —  Before you set foot in the gym or start planning out your meals, it’s good to get an understanding of where your body is.

“So you can actually see the breakdown of your muscle in pounds, your body fat in pounds, your body fat percent, and it also helps track your progress too. Another important number that you get from it is your metabolic rate which is the amount of calories your body is naturally burning,” said store manager Erin Ogle.

Now all those figures can seem a little confusing.

“So your skeletal muscle mass which is what it gives you, it tells you exactly how much muscle you’re carrying on your frame. This is a good number to know especially for weight loss customers, if they’re trying to lose weight we want to make sure the weight that they’re losing is not muscle it’s body fat,” Ogle said.

But why is it good to know these numbers?

“Especially weight loss customers, because they can get so concerned with the total number on the scale but it’s not necessarily what you need to be paying attention to,” Ogle said.

Ogle said if you are putting on muscle and losing body fat, your total weight might not drop that much, but that doesn’t mean you aren’t seeing results.
