How to protect your information following AT&T data breach

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — AT&T is reporting a massive data breach that affects some 73 million accounts.

On Saturday, the company said the data included personal information of current and former customers, including social security numbers.

AT&T said all data was shared on the dark web about two weeks ago.

The leak does not appear to contain financial information or specifics about call history, according to the company

AT&T is now reaching out to customers and asking them to reset their account passcodes.

It is also urging customers to remain alert about changes to their accounts or credit reports.

Wilmington Police spokesman, Lieutenant Greg Willett said its important to remember to not share your personal information over the phone.

“If you just don’t give your information out, people can’t get it,” Willett said. “If you didn’t solicit something or you didn’t approach the person, don’t give your information out. Don’t give your information out over the phone. If you get an email giving you, saying you purchased something, contact your bank. Don’t contact that entity, it could be fake and your bank will have the records of it.”

Willett said law enforcement will never call to ask someone to pay their way out of a warrant.
