Power knocked out in Carolina Beach when transformers blow

CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WWAY) – Earlier this evening, two transformers blew in Carolina Beach leaving several homes and businesses without power.

It happened near the Gulf Stream restaurant. It started as just a typical day at work for Betsy Todd

“The transformer exploded and it was a big flash of light, then complete darkness,” said Todd. “Our computers and everything were going crazy.”

But it definitely didn’t end like one.

“They were in the kitchen with flashlights trying to finish cooking, it was a mess.”

Finish cooking, because customers at the restaurant were trying to have dinner when the lights went out.

“We had several table but because we have gas were able to finish and everyone enjoyed it.”

Carolina Beach Police redirected traffic from Carl Winner Avenue around the area while Duke Energy fixed the down lines. No word on what caused the transformer to blow, but the weather likely played a part.

After a while, crews managed to have the power back on.

“It was an interesting day of work, to say the least,’ Todd added.
