“It’s their time,” NC State Legend Dereck Whittenburg talks Wolfpack’s Final Four run

Sports Director Jake Eichstaedt asks the National Champion what similarities Whittenburg sees between the Cardiac Pack and the 2024 team.

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WWAY) – Even Dereck Whittenburg thinks his ‘Cardiac Pack’ and this 2024 Wolfpack men’s basketball teams have similarities.

Whittenburg was a key member of the 1983 championship team, starting at guard. Most famously, Whittenburg attempted the game-winning shot in the national championship game, before it was redirected in by Lorenzo Charles as time expired to win NC State the game and secure one of the most ‘Cinderella’-like runs in sports history.

He is currently employed by the athletic department. He also was a fixture in the ESPN 30 for 30 documentary, “Survive and Advance”.
