Transgender actress Alexis Arquette has died at 47

Alexis Arquette, a member of the famous Arquette acting family, died Sunday morning. He was 47.

The passing of Arquette, who was born Robert, was announced on Facebook by his brother, Richmond.

“Our brother Robert, who became our brother Alexis, who became our sister Alexis, who became our brother Alexis, passed this morning September 11, at 12:32 am,” he wrote. “He was surrounded by all of his brothers and sisters, one of his nieces and several other loved ones.”

“We were playing music for him and he passed during David Bowie’s ‘Starman.’ As per his wishes, we cheered at the moment that he transitioned to another dimension,” Richmond Arquette added.

Arquette began his acting career at the age of 12. He starred in a number of films, including “Of Mice and Men,” “Bride of Chucky” and “The Wedding Singer,” before documenting his gender transition in the 2007 film, “Alexis Arquette: She’s My Brother.”

ABC News is using male pronouns to identify Alexis Arquette in deference to how his brother, Richmond Arquette, identified him in his Facebook post.

Oscar winner Patricia Arquette remembered her brother on Twitter, by sharing the late Bowie’s song, “Starman.” She added, “Breaking through the veil singing StarMan.”

Richmond Arquette, 53, also shared his thoughts, saying: “I am feeling immense gratitude to have been afforded the luxury of sharing life with him/her, for learning from Alexis, for being given the gift of being able to love her/him and to be loved by him/her. He was a force.”

“He died as he lived, on his own terms,” he continued. “I am immensely grateful that it was fast and painless. It was an incredibly moving experience and I am humbled and grateful to have been able to have been with him as he began his journey onward. Thank you, Alexis, I love you and will love you always.”

As news of Alexis Arquette’s death spread Sunday afternoon, many took to social media to remember him, including Boy George.

The singer wrote on Twitter, “R.I.P my sister Alexis Arquette. Another bright light gone out far too soon. Love to the family and all that loved Alexis.”
