New Hanover Co. Sheriff’s Office warns of jury duty scam

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — The New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office is warning people about a jury duty scam.

Lt. Jerry Brewer with the sheriff’s office said someone from out of the state is calling people in the area telling them they have missed grand jury duty. He said the person says there is a warrant for your arrest and you owe $500 and have to pay it over the phone or put it on a pre-paid card.

Brewer said the sheriff’s office would never do that.

“This is totally false,” Brewer said. “If you miss jury duty, you’ll be contacted by the sheriff’s office. You can find that out. It’s easy. We are never ever going to ask you for money over the phone.”

Brewer said you can call the sheriff’s office any time if you think you have missed jury duty and they will get it figured out for you.
