Family honors son’s memory with food drive

Newsome family lost their son Alex in a baseball accident in 2014, and have collected tens of thousands canned food items ever since

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WWAY) – Since the first drive in 2018, Alex Newsome is responsible for feeding countless underprivileged kids in North Carolina. His tragic death in 2014 has not stopped his family from fighting for a cause he was passionate about.

Friday, Hoggard high school hosted Ashley high school in a baseball and softball matchup. At the gate, many people donated canned food items for Nourish NC. Since its inception, “Food 2 Help” has collected tens of thousands of cans.

All contributions of food or funds will be donated to NourishNC, a 501(c)3 non-profit agency that operates in New Hanover County. The mission of NourishNC is to “Provide healthy food to hungry children, empowering them to succeed in the classroom and in their community.” Their goal is to enhance children’s health and well-being by preventing the disastrous consequences of child hunger. NourishNC’s programs include a Backpack Program that provides children with food over the weekends and school breaks, Farmer’s MarKID’s, and emergency food pantries for children.
