Leland Police Department releases name of driver killed in US 17 crash

LELAND, NC (WWAY) — A deadly traffic accident briefly closed down a portion of US 17 in Leland around 12:30 Tuesday afternoon.

Monique Bowens, 58, of Leland was killed, according to the Leland Police Department. A passenger in the vehicle was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police say the vehicle was traveling south on US 17 at 50 to 55 miles per hour when it entered a turn lane and struck a pole near the intersection of West Gate Drive.

The investigation remains ongoing.
