UNCW Softball wins CAA title

Seahawks will find out which NCAA regional they play in on Sunday at 7 pm

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WWAY) – The Seahawks Softballers did it again. For the second time in the last three years, and the second time in program history, UNCW Softball is CAA champs.

With win number 33 of the year, the Seahawks took down the Campbell Camels in a do-or-die game.

It was scoreless through the top of 6. Then, the home-team Camels plated one run.

The Seahawks would respond, pouring in three runs in the top of the seventh. Junior pitcher Kara Hammock then shut the door in the bottom half of the inning, sending UNCW to the NCAA tournament. She threw 107 pitches Sunday after a career high 159 Friday. It’s her 17th win of the season and the 15th complete game of the season.

First baseman Lauren Cope delivered the game-winning runs in the seventh. She reached on a fielder’s choice, but a throwing error to home scored Ava Tsiouplis and Mary Sobataka. Even though Madison Biddle also scored on a Jentri Meadows groundout, that was all UNCW needed.

The team will find out their fate Sunday evening to see which regional they are selected to play in. Walk Ons will host the watch party.
