Flooding a major concern from Hurricane Matthew

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Hurricane Matthew is edging closer, and river flooding is something we are watching very closely.

Flash flooding is obviously a huge concern as Matthew moves near southeastern North Carolina, but considering how saturated our area already is, this could be a major problem for many areas includes creeks and rivers.

Along the Cape Fear River, Water Street and Battleship Park are places known to flood easily near downtown Wilmington.

Many places in the region are currently 150-200 percent higher in rainfall totals compared to normal levels since September.

Rainfall totals could top out at more than 10 inches from Matthew. All of this rain expected to happen within a relatively short period of time will quickly lead to run-off and flooding.
