Wilmington nonprofit builds beds for children in need

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — At Independence Mall on Saturday, dozens of volunteers took part in building beds for children who don’t have one. The event is organized by Sleep in Heavenly Peace’s Wilmington Chapter in collaboration with two Boy Scouts—Wesley Caddell and Lawson Rottman—who are working towards their Eagle Scout rank.

SHP volunteer Davie Waggett said seeing the reaction of families in need makes the work all worth it.

“We just delivered beds the other day to a house for six children. We put six beds in one house, and there was no beds in that house. The joy on her heart, you know those kids are going to sleep on a bed tonight,” he said.

Since SHP’s Wilmington chapter began building last year, the nonprofit has built more than 300 beds, and delivered almost all of them. Waggett said this year they plan to build and distribute 400 beds by the end of the year.
