Oak Island Masonic Lodge reopens after November fire

OAK ISLAND, NC (WWAY) — The Oak Island Masonic Lodge that burned in November reopened on Saturday.

Although the fire did not destroy the exterior of the structure, the building’s interior, including furniture, photographs, and historical documents were all lost in the fire. The building has stood on E Oak Island Drive since 1985.

On Saturday, a rededication was held for the lodge to officially restore normal operations. Despite the fire, the lodge still donated more than $7,000 to charitable causes in the community during the building’s absence. Mason Joe Maggiola said a lot was lost during the fire, but that the lodge is ready to continue serving the community.

“It was a damaging fire of over $270,000. It took a variety of organizations to rebuild the interior of the lodge. The exterior of the lodge was saved, thank God,” he said.

Maggiola added that the lodge is still in the process of retrieving photos of past lodge masters, all of which were lost during the fire.
