Speak Ya Peace hosts Juneteenth celebration at the Cameron Art Museum

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Several residents gathered at the Cameron Art Museum to continue one of the many Juneteenth celebrations that took place over the weekend.

The Juneteenth Committee of Wilmington and Speak Ya Peace hosted an afternoon of poetry readings, spoken words, and music. Several different speakers got on stage to express themselves in whatever form they chose. Different ages groups also took part in the celebration from young children to older adults. Sonya Patrick, Southeastern Region Chair of the National Black Leadership Caucus, said its important to reflect on history, while also embracing the future.

“Were it not for the United States Color Troops, there would be no Juneteenth. The Cameron Art Museum has done very well in preserving the history of the United States Color Troops. Poetry, spoken words, speaks of our struggle and how giving up is not an option.”
