Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office K9 ‘Axel’ retiring after 8 years

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — A K9 with the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office is retiring.
‘Axel’ put in eight years of service with the Sheriff’s Office.
He started in May of 2016 as a multi-purpose explosive detection canine, responsible for finding and apprehending many criminals and locating many missing persons.
Axel performed numerous explosive detection sniffs, that fortunately yielded no explosives found
After a few medical episodes over the last few months and deep thought from his handler, Deputy Q. Moore, the decision was made to retire Axel and let him enjoy retired life.
Axel will go to his first handler, D. Gunnell, so he will be returning to the first family he knew.
