Carolina Beach Ocean Rescue entertains and educates beachgoers through Instagram videos
CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WWAY) — From rip currents to water rescues, it’s been a busy summer at all three New Hanover County beaches.
However, Carolina Beach Ocean Rescue has also gained tens of thousands of followers on its Instagram account through its viral water safety videos.
The Ocean Rescue has been posting daily videos, telling the day’s low and high tide, water temp, and flag condition.
“Good morning Carolina Beach, high tide today is gonna be at 5:08 and low tides at 10:41, the water temp is 83 degrees,” a lifeguard said in one such video.
Lifeguard Stuart Shaver said the videos are a fun way to share information with beachgoers.
“I think it’s a really cool way to just get to know the public and to let them know that we’re here for them and that we have their safety at our top priority,” Shaver said.
From passing around a volleyball to smashing a watermelon, Carolina Beach Ocean Rescue’s most recent videos have started to go viral, with several getting more than 150,000 views and thousands of likes.
Head lifeguard Davis Tidball said while the Ocean Rescue account has more than 50,000 followers, he hopes more and more people join the growing community of accounts that post about water safety.
“I hope it grows,” Tidball said. “I’ve seen other beaches doing the same thing that we’re doing and that makes me real happy that there’s been, I guess, an increase in the community of people that are just trying to make all beachgoers as safe as possible. It’s a real awesome thing that we got going on.”
