Welcome Home Angel renovates Leland woman’s home

LELAND, NC (WWAY) — From DJing to drawing angel wings, Alexyss Johnson is full of artistic ideas.

The 24-year-old Leland native is mute and confined to a wheelchair, but through the efforts of the non-profit Welcome Home Angel, her life became a little bit easier.

The group redecorated and added a drawing area for Alexyss in her room, enlarged her bathroom, installed an overhead lift system, and constructed an outdoor ramp that connects to her room.

These renovations were a project more than 3 years in the making.

Her mother, Danielle Coffey said the renovations will make it easier for them to care for her daughter.

“It’s just amazing,” Coffey said. “With the Hoyer lift system and the bathroom bigger, it just simplifies her care on such a wide level and really personalizes her room for her and her companion animal, her cat. It just makes everything, it just makes it all, all wonderful for her.”

Alexis was also thrilled with the changes, using a machine where she spells with her eyes to share her excitement.

“Thank you Welcome Home Angel,” Johnson said. “It means a lot to me, so thank you so much.”

Alexyss has 3 younger siblings and Welcome Home Angel renovated their rooms.

The non-profit’s executive director, Craig Wagner, said that with all the work they did, it was one of the largest renovation projects they’d ever undertaken.

Johnson is currently studying at Cape Fear Community College, where she is expected to graduate in the fall of 2025 with an associate’s degree in art.
