Deb Butler nominated for District 18 Representative

LELAND, NC (WWAY) — The votes are in, Deb Butler a Wilmington attorney and activist, was nominated as former Representative Susi Hamilton’s replacement.

This nomination makes Butler one step closer to becoming one of two LGBT members of the North Carolina General Assembly. Wednesday night an executive committee nominated Butler out of several candidates.

“What an honor. What a privilege. It’s an exciting time for me personally and professionally of course. I relish the opportunity to be involved with so many democrats and emerge as the victor perfectly all inspiring. And I can’t wait to get to Raleigh and start getting to work,” Butler said.

Hamilton was recently appointed North Carolina’s Secretary of Natural and Cultural Resources, leaving her seat open to 10 potential replacements.

“We had a wide array of candidates. They are all so talented and gifted in their own right. Again it’s an honor to be in their company. They are all good strong democrats and I’m sure they are going to continue to work for us,” Butler said.

Aside from education and health issues across the district, Butler’s main focus when she takes office will be the controversial bathroom bill.

“Certainly the repeal of HB2 is imperative. Because lets face it it’s morally incorrect. And has damaged our state immeasurably,” Butler said.

It is a job Butler is more than excited for.

“I am going to be open and available. I’m going to roll up my sleeves. My door will always be open. I want to hear the issues from you directly and we’ll get to work together,” Butler said.

While Butler awaits Raleigh she plans to prepare herself for the new position.

“I’m going to call Susi Hamilton and find out where I’m supposed to go and where I’m supposed to be,” Butler said.

Right now, Governor Roy Cooper has seven days to accept Butler’s nomination. After seven days the legislature will seat the nominee.
