‘Epic’ event featuring preschool drug dealer to raise money for kids in need

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The city is gearing up for a night of culinary competition, community spirit, and charitable giving as the “Epic Evening for an Epic Cause” returns next week. The annual fundraiser, benefiting the Methodist Home for Children, will take place on September 5 at the Burney Center at UNCW.

The event is the primary fundraiser for the Methodist Home for Children, with all proceeds supporting children in need within the community.

“It’s our one big fundraiser that we have each year, and all of that money that’s raised stays right here locally,” said Patrons Committee Chairman Jeff Sumrell.

Epic Evening will feature a competition where local chefs, vendors, and brewers will showcase their skills, competing for various awards, including the coveted Copper Kettle award.

“It’s blind judging, everybody gets a chance to put their best dish together, and the judges make their decisions,” Sumrell said. “The crowd themselves also get to make a choice with the People’s Choice Awards.”

Attendees will also have the opportunity to participate in both silent and live auctions. Local churches have contributed themed baskets for the silent auction, while the live auction will feature larger packages such as deep sea fishing trips, spa days, and more.

This year’s keynote speaker is Dana Trent, whose remarkable life story promises to captivate the audience.

“She has a very interesting story,” Sumrell said. “From being a preschool drug dealer to becoming an author of eight books, a Duke University graduate, a professor, an ordained pastor, and a Pilates instructor, she’s someone you could really enjoy talking to for a long time.”

The “Epic Evening for an Epic Cause” will start at 6 p.m. on September 5 at the Burney Center at UNCW. Tickets are available online, and all proceeds will benefit local children through the Methodist Home for Children.
