After the Storm: Homeowner grapples with insurance challenges

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, N.C. (WWAY) — The storm that swept through Brunswick County and surrounding areas on Monday, leaves residents picking up the pieces.

Just a day after Governor Roy Cooper visited Southport to declare disaster areas, North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey arrived to assess the damage.

Causey emphasized the importance of having the right insurance coverage, particularly for events like flooding and fire.

“If you have insurance for these specific occurrences, you will be covered. But if you don’t, it could spell disaster,” he warned.

One homeowner, Lill Ashton, experienced several inches of flooding that rendered her property and vehicle unrecognizable.

Unfortunately, she does not have flood insurance.

Ashton recounted how she was advised against getting flood coverage. “Multiple parties, including builders, my insurance agent, and the mortgage company, assured me I was not in a flood zone,” she said, expressing her feelings. “I trusted the professionals, believing that since I’m not near the water, I would be okay without it.”

During his visit Causey highlighted three essential types of insurance homeowners need to protect their investments: flood insurance, wind and hail coverage, and a standard homeowners or dwelling policy.

“It’s vital to consult your insurance agent at least once a year to ensure your policies are up to date,” he advised.

Ashton now faces the task of funding repairs out of her own pocket, hoping that others affected by the storm receive the assistance they need.

“My heart goes out to those who lost their homes,” she said. “I just hope everyone gets the help they deserve.”

In the meantime, Ashton has hired a restoration company to evaluate the damage.

Cleanup efforts have begun with the use of humidifiers and fans to eliminate moisture.

For anyone navigating the world of insurance claims, the North Carolina Department of Insurance is available to assist.

They review all claims filed, providing much-needed support to those recovering from the storm’s impact.
