Malloy sentenced to life in prison for 2015 home invasion murder

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A man will spend the rest of his life in prison for killing a man two years ago.

A judge this morning sentenced Michael Malloy to life a day after a jury convicted Malloy in the 2015 shooting death of Yancey Edwards.

Prior to the sentencing, Edwards’ mother addressed the court.

She said Edwards was loved and would’ve never done what Malloy did to him. She also acknowledged Malloy’s family, saying she knows both sides are hurting.

After sentencing, and through tears, both families shared a long hug.

On May 4, 2015, Edwards died during a home invasion in Ogden. Another man, Joshua Roydes, was shot in the arm during a scuffle, while Hannah Gastwirth was not hurt. The victims told investigators the suspects came into the home and demanded money and drugs, according to the victims. Two dogs were also shot and killed.

Malloy is the third person convicted in this case.

In January, Theio Manley pleaded guilty to murder and other crimes. His prison sentence is 30-34 years.

Last year Brent Thomas James Hyatt of Rocky Point pleaded guilty for his role in the crime. Investigators say he drove Malloy and Manley to the home. A judge sentenced Hyatt to more than 20 years in prison.

Roydes, who survived the shooting, died late last year in a hit-and-run crash on Oleander Drive.
