UNCW freshman pitcher receives CAA honors
WILMINGTON, North Carolina (UNCWSports.com) – Freshman Zarion Sharpe was honored as the Colonial Athletic Association Pitcher-of-the-Week following his complete game win over James Madison giving UNCW a sweep of the weekend series.
Sharpe, whose career-long outing was five innings the previous weekend at NC Central, became the first Seahawk freshman to go the distance since Daniel Cropper did so on Apr. 20, 2007, in an 8-0 win over Towson. Sharpe needed just 109 pitches in picking up his second win of the season. He threw a high of 18 pitches in one inning, which included an 11-pitch at bat to one hitter.
Sharpe allowed one run on four hits, walked none, struck out five and recorded 17 fly ball outs. He lowered his earned run average over two full runs.
With the sweep, UNCW moved into fifth-place in the CAA, just a game and a half out of second.
The Seahawks conclude a four-game homestand on Apr. 18 with a 6 p.m. start against East Carolina. UNCW then returns to conference play next weekend with three games at Hofstra beginning on Apr. 21.
