Southport celebrates achievements of Quinton McCracken
SOUTHPORT, NC (WWAY) — The city of Southport celebrated the achievements and career of former professional baseball player Quinton McCracken on Saturday, according to Mayor Jerry Dove.
Tomorrow, McCracken will be inducted into the Greater Wilmington Sports Hall of Fame.
McCracken was born and raised in Southport. He spent his childhood there and was a star track runner, football, baseball, and basketball player at South Brunswick High School. He led his baseball team to the state championship in 1988 and helped win them the title of state champions that year.
Saturday, Mayor Dove presented a proclamation to the city declaring that April 30th will from now on be “Quinton McCracken Day” in Southport. McCracken was also presented with a sign that will be placed at the entry to Southport stating that the city is “Home to Quinton McCracken.”
Dozens came out to honor the star athlete, including former high school classmates, teachers, coaches, and friends.
