7 area teams prepare for next round of playoffs
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) –The state playoffs for high school sports are down to the final eight in the respective brackets. We have seven teams playing for their chance to go to the state championships and each one has their chances of getting to the next round.
In baseball there are four teams fighting for their chance to play for the state title. Let’s start off with the number one team in North Carolina, New Hanover. They are facing off against Fuquay Varina High School at home. The Wildcats are 22-3 overall this season and have only given up one run as the Bengals are 19-7 with a top 20 state ranking and they are coming off of a win where they came back from a 6-0 deficit. That game is at 7.
Two teams from our area are meeting up in the 3A state bracket as West Brunswick will travel up to Topsail. The Trojans are coming off the high of winning their last game in walk off fashion as Topsail won their game by ten. The matchup between the #23 ranked Trojans and #16 Pirates is at 6.
The Whiteville Wolfpack are looking to keep their 7 game win streak going against Bear Grass Charter. The Pack has only given up one run, BGC has given up two, but scored 20 runs on their own. First pitch of that game is at seven.
In the girls 4A soccer world, the Hoggard Vikings may have found their toughest opponent so far as they take on the Green Hope Falcons who are undefeated and ranked second in the state. The game up in Cary will start at 6:30 can the Vikings keep the shutout playoffs going?
In girls softball West Brunswick will look to knock off Lee County on the road, that game will start off at 7.
Finally. the Whiteville Lady Wolf Pack softball team will be up at Princeton High School at seven trying to hopefully follow the baseball team to the final four.
