Completion date for Boiling Spring Lakes’ dams restoration project pushed back

BOILING SPRING LAKES, NC (WWAY) –“Once you get in the project, you have to finish the project,” said Mayor Jeff Winecoff.

Boiling Spring Lakes is working on a restoration project for four dams damaged by Hurricane Florence.

However, Boiling Spring Lakes Mayor Jeff Winecoff says they’ve faced some setbacks after Tropical Storm Debby and Potential Tropical Cyclone Eight.

“Everything that is permanent held up but everything that was temporary got washed away. So, that put the timeline of the dams roughly about 10-months behind schedule. Which will be some time probably spring of 2027 of it finishing up,” Winecoff said.

Boiling Spring Road closed in July of 2023.

In order for it to reopen, both North Lake and Pine Lake dams will need to be repaired, which has been their main priority.

“There’s been a lot of complaints from our residents about getting our road east BSL opened back up and they’re like we need to open it now. But the problem that they don’t understand is that we are in construction right now. For us to be able to stop this construction, open these roads back up, means us paying back roughly about 30 million dollars in grant money. Which would probably cost our taxpayers,” Winecoff stated.

Winecoff is optimistic that they can get ahead of schedule again.

“The contractors have worked hard; they’ve got ahead of schedule before and hopefully with the good weather we can get back ahead of schedule. The sooner we can get this road to open back up, which they understand and are working fully on now, the better off the city will be,” Winecoff added.
