A parent with New Hanover County Schools talks about school safety after her daughter was hit by a car last year
"I don't think or feel like I was asking for too much but just some kind of- that was what I've been asking for, just some more lights."
NEW HANOVER COUNTY (WWAY)–The New Hanover County Board of Education members held a town hall meeting Tuesday night to allow board members to hear from the public. There are several topics people shared with the board. A few on some people’s minds included the district’s search for a new superintendent, cell phone policies, and school safety. However, one parent specifically came to talk about school safety after her daughter got hit by a car leaving school last year.
“I don’t think or feel like I was asking for too much but just some kind of- that was what I’ve been asking for, just some more lights,” says Kimberly Spicer.
January 3rd, 2023, there was a moment no parent wanted to experience.
“What needs to happen next to get change or something in that area,” Spicer questioned.
Kimberly Spicer tells me it was the night her daughter Kimora was at a high school basketball game at Laney High School and was hit by a car.
“It was a very dark area, and as soon as she stepped on the street, she got hit,” Spicer explains.
But before she spoke with WWAY, she came to the New Hanover County Board of Education Center looking for solutions.
“It’s been a lot of people talking about it and complaints,” Spicer says.
Tuesday’s school board meeting is a roundtable with the public, letting them express concerns to board members. There were many topics, qualifications for a new superintendent, cellphones in school, but most importantly, which brought Spicer out, school safety.
“I was just sitting there listening and seeing what topics they were discussing. I’m all about the kids,” Spicer says. “And, I’ve been asking, can y’all [do] something? Anything?”
Some people have been backing her with signed petitions. She explains to WWAY that there are so many signed that she lost count of how many there were. However, Spicer says Kimora’s recovery is at 100%.
“She’s an upcoming Senior this year, and all bones have healed. The fact that you’re still here and it didn’t go another way, that was my main thing,” Spicer says.
But until Spicer gets the help she needs, she will keep asking until a change is seen.
