Tabor City hosts annual N.C. Yam Festival

TABOR CITY, NC (WWAY) — The annual North Carolina Yam Festival is returning to Tabor City this weekend in Columbus County.

This year’s theme? — “Here a yam… There a yam… Everywhere a yam yam.”

The festival began in 1946 when the town of Tabor City was named the “yam capital of the world.”

Although the city has been celebrating with events throughout the week, the biggest day of the festival will be Saturday at the Tabor City public library from 8 am to 5 pm.

Town manager Josh Ward encourages everyone to come check it out.

“Of course we’ll have a decoration contest, the yam contest for sweet potato crop every year, the parade, vendors along the streets, a street dance, the taste of tabor. The street dance will be tonight, and the taste of tabor was last night. But the big event is tomorrow evening. Come on, have some fun, there’s something for everybody and we’d love to have you,” Ward said.

Ward adds that the town will have 5 times the amount of their everyday population during the Yam Festival.

Ward said from the town perspective this festival allows the town to show off some of the big capital projects they’ve done. He also sends his thanks to the private foundations and grants that have helped them improve Tabor City.
