WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — New Hanover County Schools says a student at Hoggard High School allegedly had a firearm in their possession.

During afternoon dismissal at Hoggard High School, staff became aware of a serious situation involving a student who had a weapon. The Staff notified the on-campus School Resource Officer from the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office, who immediately responded, safely detaining the student, and recovered a firearm.

The student involved is under 18, so their identity is not being released at this time.

Interim Superintendent Christopher Barnes says the incident should encourage parents to talk to their children about the importance of reporting incidents and information in a timely manner.
