New Year’s Eve safety tips

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Many people will be out and about ringing in the new year tonight, but it is important to remember to be safe while celebrating.

We caught up with a bar owner and the Wilmington Police Department for some safety reminders.

“Have a good time but you know, use your head,” Lieutenant Willett said.

New Year’s Eve is a busy time for Wilmington as many head downtown to ring in 2025.

Wilmington Police Lieutenant Greg Willett has an important reminder if you plan to drink.

“You know, it kind of goes common sense. And you hear it all the time with everything, and we are not going to stop saying it. But don’t drink and drive. Don’t drink to the point where you are making bad decisions and being irresponsible,” Lt. Willett shared.

Lt. Willett suggests using rideshare apps such as Uber or Lyft or have a designated driver.

Other things to keep in mind if you are heading out

“Remember where you park, park in a good spot. Park in a spot that is well lit. I would recommend traveling in at least pairs if not groups. Avoid isolated areas, avoid dark areas that may seem unsafe. Trust your instinct,” Lt. Willett stated.

Brandon Riggan, the owner of Rooftop Bar at North Front Theater in downtown Wilmington will have a champagne toast at midnight but Riggan keeps everything under control.

“For holidays we bring about 4 extra security. We make sure that we are able to control the lines outside on the street, that is more important. Well, we got everything covered on the inside. But, you know, the sidewalks get very crowded on holidays,” Riggan said.

Riggan says the standard bartender procedure won’t change but there will be an elevated amount of people to serve.

“I mean that’s what they do every day that they are working behind the bar. They know the signs to look out for over intoxication or if people should be cut off. And making sure that everybody is 21 or older. So, same as normal just a lot more people to comb through,” Riggan mentioned.

As a reminder, there will be more officers present downtown and throughout the city Tuesday night.

Also, it is recommended you don’t wear dark clothing if you plan to walk around downtown at night.

Use crosswalks and remember to watch for cars even if in a crosswalk.
