New Hanover gets revenge over West Brunswick
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — New Hanover is undefeated this season following their eighth straight win, this time against the West Brunswick Trojans 52-21. A win like that makes them our 5th Quarter Team of the Week.
“Played pretty well offensively,” Coach Earl Smith said. “Blake Walston threw for over 300 yards again and Wiz Vaughan had a big night. The defense played well in spurts. They had the ball for 9 minutes in the first quarter and drove the ball on us but after that we kind of settled in and started playing our brand of ball.”
To some, this was just another 30-something point victory for the Cats. But this game had a little extra feeling of accomplishment given the Trojans upset the Wildcats last season.
“It was really important,” New Hanover Senior Linebacker Grant Daley said. “Before the game we used it as our motivation to get revenge from last year. It was a rough game because of their ground-and-pound play-style, but we basically tried to come together as a team and, regardless of our penalties, just try to keep it together and focus on what we needed to get done.”
The focus now shifts to the next opponent. With the senior leadership on this team, they are in good hands. New Hanover is one of the top ranked teams in the state but they say the best is yet to come.
“I still feel like we haven’t hit our peak yet offensively or defensively,” New Hanover Slotback Wiz Vaughn said. “We’re still doing simple silly mistakes so I feel like once we hit our peak, that’s when you’ll see the best New Hanover team.”
