Wilmington teen charged with trafficking following police stop

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A Wilmington man was arrested and charged with multiple drug offenses following a traffic stop Thursday night, according to police.

Wilmington Police say officers were patrolling the 500 block of Maides Avenue just before 8 p.m. when they stopped a vehicle. During the stop, officers arrested Mekhi Newkirk, 18, who was identified as the front passenger.

Newkirk has been charged with possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, and trafficking in opium or heroin. He is currently being held at the New Hanover County Detention Center under a $200,000 secured bond, police said.
