UNCW unable to overcome five miscues against Coastal Carolina
CONWAY, S.C. (UNCWSports.com) – UNCW was unable to overcome five errors on Wednesday as Coastal Carolina knocked off the visiting Seahawks, 10-5, at Spring Brooks Stadium.
The Chanticleers ran their record to 8-2 while the Seahawks dipped to 5-3.
Cory Wood collected three hits at the top of the CCU order while Zach Bierman added a two-run homer.
Ryan Jeffers and Mason Berne both doubled and knocked in two runs for the Seahawks.
Breydan Gorham (0-1) took the loss while starter Anthony Simonelli improved to 2-0 for Coastal. Simonelli struck out five over five innings.
Up next: The Seahawks return to Brooks Field this weekend for a four-game series with Princeton beginning on Friday with a 4 p.m. start.
How it happened: Coastal held a 5-4 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning before striking for three runs in that frame and two more in the sixth to establish a 10-4 lead.
Inside the box score: Both teams managed just one hit with two outs … UNCW went 0-2 with the bases loaded, hitting into a double play in the fourth inning down one run … UNCW landed its leadoff hitter on base in six of nine innings.
Notes: Kep Brown extended his hitting streak to five with an infield single in the fourth inning … UNCW committed five errors in a game for the first time since May 15, 2016 at James Madison … The UNCW bullpen allowed just one earned run over 5 2.3 innings … Chris Joyner andHenry Ryan made their season debuts for UNCW … The Seahawks have dropped their last eight outings against Coastal Carolina.
