CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WWAY) — A man many considered a local icon in Carolina Beach has died.

Harry Buie was a long-term resident on Pleasure Island whom many called Santa, because of his white hair and long white beard.

The group, “Pleasure Island Habitat” announced Harry’s death on Facebook.

Buie first made news in 2016.

After his home began falling in disrepair, the community rallied together to build him a new home in 2017.

Carolina Beach Mayor Pro Tem Deb LeCompte says she was glad to have known Buie.

“He basically gave us all a lot of joy. anybody you talk to is going to tell you he was always smiling. He just made you smile. He was just one of the most humble, sweet people I have ever met in my life,” LeCompte emotionally shared.

Lecompte adds Buie will be deeply missed, and a hole will be left in her heart without seeing harry around town anymore.
