Raleigh man’s abuse caused kidney damage to toddler, court docs say

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — A Raleigh man faces a felony charge after police say he abused his girlfriend’s toddler – causing acute injury to the child’s kidney, warrants say.

Darius Lamont Mial, 24, faces a felony charge of intentional child abuse causing serious physical injury in connection with the April 7 incident, warrants show.

Mial injured the 3-year-old’s legs which caused rhabdomyolysis, warrants say.

Rhabdomyolysis is when muscles are damaged, causing the protein myoglobin is released into the bloodstream, according to the U.S. National Library of Medicine. Myoglobin is then broken down into other substances that causes damage to the kidneys.

Warrants say Mial was the boyfriend of the child’s mother and was providing care for the toddler when the injury occurred.

He’s being held under a $100,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court Monday.
